The 'town' near Ayers Rock is actually a resort town consisting soley of resorts and a 'resort centre.' Ayers Rock, (Uluru is the Aboriginal name), is, in fact, a giant rock in the middle of the desert. There are several other sights in the area (which we visited) including the Olgas (Kata Tjuta) and Kings Canyon. Both Uluru and Kata Tjuta have Aboriginal spiritual significance which results in visibly conflicted feelings at related cultural centers regarding looking at the rock, photographing the rock, touching the rock, and especially climbing the rock.
Aside from hiking and climbing to canoyon rims, we participate in some amazing sunsets and sunrises, a dinner under the star complete with an astronomer, a tasting of several types of new fruits and meats (aligator, emu, kangaroo, camel, and a few others I can't recall) and even a camel ride past Uluru at sunset.
